Conveniently nestled in the heart of Santa Rosa, The Sandman was built as a Mission-style motel in the early 1970s. It is perhaps best known for its proximity to the 101, in addition to the area’s best wineries and breweries, dining options, outdoor activities, and downtown businesses.

The Sandman debuted a dramatic transformation in May 2017, only to be forced to close five months later due to the devastating Tubbs Fire, which claimed homes and hotels in nearby neighborhoods in Santa Rosa and caused smoke damage to more than half of its 135 rooms. Within a few weeks, however, The Sandman was fully restored; when it reopened, it housed local residents who were displaced from their homes due to the fire.

Two years later, The Sandman faced another challenge: the COVID-19 pandemic, which dramatically reduced occupancy rates at all U.S. hotels, forcing many of them to close. The Sandman remained open and was a popular destination due to the introduction of a Summer Night event series aimed at locals who were looking for an escape close to home.

Since then, a fresh energy and vision has awoken at The Sandman, transforming this classic roadside motel into a reimagined boutique hotel experience. What hasn’t changed, though, is The Sandman’s reputation for providing a great night’s sleep along with a respite from a busy workday or a long day of traveling.

After recently undergoing a multi-million dollar renovation, The Sandman Hotel has thrown back the covers and celebrated its reawakening, combining the harmonic balance between sweet sleep and invigorating adventure. Property improvements include newly renovated bathrooms in all guestrooms, updated kitchenettes with new dishware and modern appliances such as toaster ovens, microwaves, coffee makers, and electric kettles, fresh paint and fixtures with whimsical artwork and furniture, distinct murals by local artisits throughout the propety, a new fitness center with state-of-the-art equipment, and a new wellness dome for yoga and more.
